Our speaker on March 2nd was Peter Higginbotham from Ilkley ,the title of his talk was " Please Sir I want some more ". Peter has undertaken much research into the history of workhouses over the years and the diets of those  living there and produced a number of books as a result of his work. We were told that the first workhouses were created in the 15th century and were benevolent in nature.  However, in Victorian times the attitude was to make them inhospitable and unpleasant places to live. Food was very basic and included gruel. In some cases the food was contaminated with rat droppings but was still used !  Clive Moyns proposed a vote of thanks

Our Annual General Meeting is on March 16th 10 am at the Otley Methodist Church. We hope this  will be well supported by our members. Following the meeting David McDowall is going to tell us of his experiences in Japan this year when he attended an international conference on behalf of the British Lions movement.
