October 6th 2016

At our meeting  we were entertained by Peter Calvert, now a retired Vicar who lives in Todmorden. He related the time when he was 16 years old and worked at the Squires Gate Holiday camp in Blackpool during his school holidays. The title of his talk was "Hi-de-Hi revisited" and Peter told us that from his experience the camp was indeed just like the television programme we all know. He worked in the kitchens where food was prepared for thousands. The food was simple and crudely prepared and hygiene was non existent. Refrigeration was minimal and yet there was little evidence of food poisoning. In the Summer there was an influx of miners working at the camp. They gave up there mining jobs to have a good time. There were lots of young female campers arriving each weekend so there was plenty of high jinks going on! .However, Peter found the place a happy one with lots of good people. A life that has now gone!. A vote of thanks was proposed by David McDowell . Our next meeting is at 10 am on the 20th October at the Methodist Church. The speaker will be Karen Kaur who will talk on" Tax,care and Toy Boys, " sounds interesting! New members welcome. Just come along.
