OTLEY AND DISTRICT MENíS FORUM
Our talk on the 26th May was given by Alyn Pugh who told of the exploits of his father Dei during the Second World War.
Dei was one of 8 children brought up on a farm in Towyn. West Wales. Conscripted into the RAF he was sent in 1941 To Calgary, Alberta to train as a pilot. The sea journey via Nova Scotia was unpleasant with only rudimentary facilities. On return to England he was posted to Pocklington flying Halifax bombers. There he met his wife at a dance. He flew a number of sorties and one was to bomb a V2 rocket installation at Peenemunde Germany where Von Braun, the rocket scientist was based. It was successful and they returned safely.
His final sortie was to bomb Berlin at the end of January 1944. The plane was hit by enemy fire and severely disabled. They ditched in the North Sea and it was 3 days before they were found and returned to hospital in Brechin, Scotland. There were severe injuries and one crew member had died.Following this he was consigned to light duties.
Alyn was thanked for the most interesting talk.
The next meeting of the Forum at the Methodist church, 10 am will be on the 8 th September when J David Philip will talk on " The history of Dacre ' s and Otley housing" . New members most welcome.
