OTLEY AND DISTRICT MENíS FORUM
Our speaker on the 28th April was Nora Mayes, the title of her talk being
" Miles and Smiles of Public Speaking". She told us that she was
first introduced to public speaking when supporting the RNLI. They arranged
for her to attend a course on speaking and this assisted her greatly, giving
her more confidence. She was told not to "waffle" , to stand still
and look her audience in the eye. Nora said that when talking to an elderly
audience it sometimes happened that someone would fall asleep. However, I am
pleased to report that it did not happen at this talk ! .
She related some embarrassing moments including dropping food on her dress at a posh" do" at Monk Fryston Hall but got away with it by saying she was taking it home for supper !. also speaking in Knaresborough when told that a hat would be passed round at the end and they would pay depending whether they had enjoyed it !
Nora closed by reciting a saying from Winston Churchill, "Have the courage to stand up and speak and also have the courage to sit down and listen. ". A vote of thanks was given by Peter Giles.
The speaker at our next meeting on the 12th May , 10 am at the Methodists is Alex Purves who will talk on visual wit and humour in art. New members most welcome.
