Our speaker on 14th April was Malcolm Jarvis.who had spent more than forty years in the textile industry, his title being "Bradford textiles, not just wool".Whilst clearly much wool was processed in Bradford there were many other textiles produced. He cited Listers mill who were world leaders in the processing of velvet and Salts mill where Alpaca was a major product.Even cotton was processed in Bradford although it was a staple product in Lancashire and in Calderdale where the damp conditions suited the processes required.

Bradford was of course a centre for the buying and selling of wool in the Wool Exchange building and there was much technical expertise developed by organisations such as the Wool Industry Research Association and the Bradford Dyers Association.

Whilst the industry has obviously contracted Bradford is still a centre led by the Wool Marketing board.

Mr Jarvis was thanked by the chairman.

Our next meeting is on the 28th April when Norma Mayes will tell us about "Miles and Smiles of Public Speaking"
