We met on the 4th February.

The Mysterious Life Story of Agatha ChristieÖ.Pat Osbourne

We had all read and enjoyed the"who dunitt" novels of Agatha Christie but knew little about the person.Pat Osbourne gave us a most interesting talk about her life and character. She told us that Agatha was born in Torquay  in 1890 to a rich American family and was one of three children. She was bright and inventive and taught herself to read at an early age. Her family suffered severe financial problems which caused them to move to France . However she met Archie Christie and was married in 1914. On returning to Torquay she worked in a war hospital and it was here she learned in the dispensary about poisons which were to feature in some of her books. Her first novel was published in 1920.

In 1925 her marriage was failing and this was the time she disappeared for 10 days causing great concern until she was discovered staying at the White Swan in Harrogate. She was divorced in 1928 and remarried Max Mallowan an Archeologist in 1939. She died in 1976 aged 85 .

David McDowell gave a vote of thanks. Our next meeting is on February 18th  at 10 am at the Methodist Church when Geoff Queen will entertain us with a Great Britain Quiz. New members welcome.
