  How To Tell A Joke
John Hay

18th Oct 2012

The output of jokes by our member John Hay clearly illustrated the title of his talk “How to tell a joke (not for Ladies, Prudes and Vicars)”. His jokes varied in content from innocuous to profane and dubious but all of them drew laughter from his audience. We heard jokes about  and from South Africa , London , Wales , Scotland , America , Yorkshire and Working Men’s Clubs.

He illustrated his talk by using Limericks (a five line humorous poem usually dealing with a risqué subject) and Rhyming Couplets: the last of these being a Couplet by Cyril Fletcher about a painted lavatory seat that got him banned by the BBC.

We heard about Kathleen Ferrier’s penchant for rude jokes and the charisma of such great artists as Ken Dodd, Tommy Cooper and Frank Sinatra.

The result of this presentation was almost a full hour of laughter and enjoyment.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 1st November at Otley Methodist Church at 10-00am when

Richard Smith will give us a colourful talk entitled “Dyeing for a Living”.
