  German Imperial Cities & Palaces

John Gilleghan MBE

20th Oct 2011

A superbly narrated virtual tour of Germany from Berlin to Bavaria , aided by projected photographs, was given to us by John Gilleghan MBE . Based on a 12 day Titan Tour, John entitled his talk “German Imperial Cities & Palaces.

Starting in Berlin we progressed to Potsdam , Leipzig , Colditz, Dresden , Bamberg , Coburg , Nuremberg , Rothenburg, Wurzburg , Wiesbaden and Heidelberg .

For each city and town he had a fund of stories from factual to hear say. We heard about the two Brandenberg Gates of Berlin that are 20 miles apart, and viewed the Fuhrerbunker as well as the 2,711 concrete blocks Memorial to the 6.2 million Jews murdered by Hitler.

Progressing south we visited the Colditz Prison Camp and saw both the devastation and restoration of Dresden and Nuremberg before proceeding to complete the tour at Heidelberg the famous German University town, which like Oxford was not bombed during the Second World War.

Ironically at our next meeting on Thursday 3rd November Peter Rix will tell us about the life of Barnes Wallis. As usual the meeting will take place at 10-00am in Otley Methodist Church Hall.
