In 1976, under the umbrella of the Otley Council of Churches a
group produced a directory called "Welcome to Otley".
As you can imagine, this was a mammoth task particularly as it was typed by hand
and completely prepared for printing by the group.
In 1978, the task was repeated and again sufficient numbers printed for the
directory to be well distributed throughout the town.
At the time it was recognised that "computers" could have something to
offer but the ideas were unclear and there was no vision of what was to be.
This directory is offered as a tribute to those that produced the first two
editions so long ago. It is well appreciated that the task, in so many, respects
is simpler because of computer technology and in some ways more exciting because
of the possibilities offered by the internet.
Since this directory was started, use of the internet has grown and it is
noticeable that in the last couple of years most of the information in this
directory can be found on the internet with the help of search engines.
The information in this directory is bound to be out of date and incorrect,
however it is hoped that in general there will be enough information to give
people, and particularly, newcomers to the town leads into their point of
